Closed-Loop Design with Scott PCU

The handling of air stream containing patriculate with high-oil or high-fat content presents a problem for conventional separation technology.  The fat/oil content of the product can make it difficult to separate from the air stream.  Cyclones will work for applications where the fat content is up to 10% to 12%, however, above 12% cyclones are not efficient nor practical enough for most operations, due to maintenance issues.  For this reason, Scott Equipment has designed a system to take the air from the discharge of the cooler directly to our Scott centrifugal separator PCU.  This unit replaces the cyclone or a bag house and is able to separate the hot air from the fine oily product that is in the air stream.  This is a new design that has been thoroughly tested and has operated successfully in major rendering facilities.  The air flows from the separator through a classifier plate to a blender section where water can be added to capture any fine particulate that still may be in the air stream.

The water with the particulate in it is now pumped back to the cooler.  The water will be approximeately four parts water and one part solid.  Calculations show that 400 pounds of water must be returned in the product to raise the moisture from 3% to 5%.  The example used in this calculation is a production rate of 20,000 pounds per hour.  Note, if only 400 pounds of water is pumped back into the system running 260°F temperature product, almost all of that water will evaporate in the cooler.  Therefore if you want to raise the moisture by 2%, 800 pounds of water will have to be added to the cooler.

This closed loop system eliminates virtually all air contamination and product loss in the air stream, as well as reducing odor.  The two problems that have concerned most customers have now been eliminated.

Scott Equipment knows that the cooler will cool your product, improve flowability and reduce condensation, which will certainly please your customers.  We know that the cooler will reduce the particle size so that only ¼ of the product will have to be ground.  The ¼ that is ground will mill much easier because it is cool and the metal trap built in the cooler will remove the metal from the product reducing hammermill damage.  The last advantage is the most important one of all…the ability to control the moisture content of the meal that is sold.
